The Leuven Institute for Ireland in Europe has expressed its sympathy to the wife and family of the late Peter Sutherland on his death on Sunday, 7th January 2018.
Peter Sutherland was a friend of the Institute and a long-time supporter of our work. He became familiar with the Institute in 1985 when he was appointed EU Commissioner and made important contributions to many of our programmes.
He continued his interest in the Institute after he left Brussels to be the founder Director of the WTO and, in the mid 1990's, chaired a think tank which reviewed the achievements of the Institute up to that point and established new horizons for the second stage of its development.
Peter was a generous friend of the Institute and assisted in the fundraising effort to further restore and develop the historic Irish College during the past decade, leading by example through his own generosity and that of his wife Maruja.
