The Leuven Institute for Ireland in Europe wishes to express its sympathy and condolences to the families of those who were bereaved and those injured in the terror attacks in Brussels on Tuesday, 22nd March 2016.
These callous and indiscriminate acts of violence have no place in a civilised society. The values on which the European Union has been built of freedom and peace will remain core to our efforts in delivering our mission and contributing to the European project.
We are very grateful to the many clients, partners and friends who contacted us in the wake of these attacks to support the Institute and our work.
This week we hosted a number of local and international programmes and all our staff and guests were safe at our campus in Leuven. We were very happy to provide our clients with additional conference facilities and accommodation nights to ensure they remained safe during their stay. We also supported their transport requirements so they could make alternative travel plans home.
We wish to assure all programme participants that have plans to visit the Institute over the coming months that we are following the security situation in Belgium very closely and will take any security precautions required by the Belgian authorities.
Leuven is a university city of approximately 90,000 inhabitants, mostly students, situated some 30 kilometres from Brussels City Centre. The Leuven Institute, located near the town hall, is housed in the historic Irish College. Our campus is self-contained with strict security procedures in place at all times.
The content of our programmes is delivered through our panel of guest lecturers at our campus in Leuven. All off site study visits are undertaken using private coach hire, avoiding the need for public transport and having the flexibility to change the course of the programme if required.
Our programme management team and our on-site operations team are always available to assist clients in the event of any emergency arising. Should you have any further queries please feel free to contact our offices in Dublin, Belfast or Leuven.
