7:30 p.m. Rossa
8 p.m. Lillis Ó Laoire
9:30 p.m. Screening of the film 'Calvary'
The Irish folk group Rossa, consisting of 7 members, plays a wide range of traditional and contemporary Irish folk songs. They will kick off our St Patrick's Night.
Following this, traditional singer Lillis Ó Laoire will sing several songs from his extensive repertoire, emphasising the storytelling elements and touching on themes of love, loss and conflict.
Lillis Ó Laoire is a native of Gortahork, one of County Donegal's most strongly speaking Gaeltacht regions and he has studied the county's Gaelic song traditions extensively. He is one of Ireland's most well-known traditional singers. His repertoire includes songs in Irish, as well as English and Scottish Gaelic. Lillis has won the premier prize for traditional singing in Irish in 1991 and 1994. Lillis has performed internationally in Marseille, in Luxembourg, at the Milwaukee Irishfest and at
Celtic Colours, an annual festival of Gaelic music in Cape Breton and Nova Scotia. Now he will be performing in Leuven on St Patrick's Day this year!
We end the evening with a screening of 'Calvary', starring Brendan Gleeson. This film about Father Lavelle, a good man who hears a dark confession, brings a mix of dark tidings and humour that guarantees a truly Irish experience. The film has been awarded several prizes.
The evening is supported by the European Federation of Associations and Centres of Irish Studies (EFACIS), the Department of Foreign Affairs, Culture Ireland, the Irish Film Institute and the Leuven Centre for Irish Studies.
